Data You Give Us Directly
Search Queries
A name or place entered into a search box is sent directly to the outside provider that operates the tool. That provider processes the query and supplies its result. We do not keep a separate log of those search terms.
Messages and Contact Submissions
An email may be retained long enough to address the message and maintain the related correspondence. It is kept within the operating team unless disclosure is required by law.
Data We Gather Automatically
Ordinary server and analytics logs can record technical details when a page loads:
- Page-view dates and times
- Browser name and version
- Device and operating-system type
- Visited pages and approximate visit length
- Referring page, when supplied
- The device's assigned IP address
Cookies and Analytics
Cookies are small device files that help measure traffic patterns, popular pages, and where visits end. Analytics providers combine that activity into reports. A browser can reject or remove cookies, though disabling them may change how some site features behave.
What We Do With This Data
- Routing a query to the selected search provider
- Finding and repairing technical faults
- Measuring which reference pages are useful
- Maintaining site speed and availability
- Displaying advertising that may reflect general interests
No Criminal-Record Data on File
Harrisonburg City Criminal History does not compile, maintain, or sell a database of personal criminal records. It publishes general directions to HPD, the shared courts and jail, Virginia State Police CCRE, and the Virginia Sex Offender and Crimes Against Minors Registry. Visitor data is not assembled into a third-party record or consumer report. This resource is not a consumer reporting agency under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
Third-Party Search Partners
Outside companies power the search boxes. Their privacy terms, retention rules, and sharing practices govern information submitted to them. Review the provider's policy before running a query because this policy does not control an outside service.
Links to Other Websites
Links lead to police, sheriff, court, state, federal, and outside-provider websites. Once a visitor leaves this site, the destination's privacy policy applies. Read those terms before providing personal information.
Advertising providers may use their own systems to measure activity across websites and select ads. Their technology and policies control that tracking.
Who Might See Your Data
We do not sell personal data. Limited information can reach:
- Analytics vendors that measure use and performance
- Search providers chosen by the visitor
- Advertising networks serving page ads
- Government authorities acting under a valid legal demand
How We Protect Your Data
Reasonable technical and organizational safeguards protect collected information. No internet service can guarantee perfect security, so a breach or unauthorized access can never be ruled out completely.
Users Under 18
This resource is intended for adults and does not knowingly collect personal data from a person under 18. A verified report that a minor supplied such information will be addressed by removing it as appropriate.
Your Data Rights
Applicable privacy and consumer law may grant more rights based on where a visitor lives. Virginia public-record access follows the Virginia Freedom of Information Act, Code § 2.2-3700 et seq., while CCRE dissemination is separately limited by Code § 19.2-389. For data this private resource actually holds, a visitor may:
- Request access to available personal data
- Ask that inaccurate data be corrected
- Seek deletion where the law allows
- Opt out of processing when an applicable right exists
Updates to This Policy
This policy may change as practices or legal duties develop. A revised version will be posted here with a new effective date, so visitors should review it periodically.
